Overview
Snowboarding in Gulmarg is a different rhythm from the Alps or Japan — colder mornings, bigger vertical once you leave the nursery, and powder that stacks deep on the Pir Panjal after a Kashmir storm. The village at 2,600 metres gives beginners wide, forgiving slopes; Gondola Phase 1 and Phase 2 open alpine bowls and forest lines that reward riders who have already found their edges.
We teach snowboarding here the way we wish someone had taught us: stance that actually fits your body, heel-edge brakes before fancy turns, and enough time on the falling-leaf drill that edge changes stop feeling like a coin flip. Absolute beginners often need a few more days than skiers to get past the early fall stage — which is why our 7-day academy is the honest recommendation when you can spare the week.
For advanced riders, Gulmarg’s freeride reputation is not marketing fluff. Mt. Apharwat’s Phase 2 bowls, summit couloirs, pillow lines in the trees, and long wilderness descents into Drung Valley are the real draw — guided at a careful 1:4, with avalanche briefings every morning.
Whether you want a short taste test, a full beginner academy, or an elite freeride week, Himalayan Ibex runs small groups, private 4×4 transfers from Srinagar, and lodging with breakfast and dinner so the mountain day ends warm. Prefer skis, or still deciding? Our combined ski & snowboard academy lives under Skiing and cross-links here.
Why here
Why this experience
A mountain that suits first rides and big lines
Gulmarg’s nursery slopes are genuinely beginner-friendly — wide enough for falling-leaf practice without constant traffic anxiety. Once heel and toe edges feel natural, Phase 1 offers longer green and blue alpine cruises with Pir Panjal views. Advanced freeriders step into Phase 2 powder bowls, forest stashes, and remote valley exits that few Indian resorts can match.
Instructors who ride and teach
Beginner clinics are led by instructors including Jawsheed and Mozim, with small groups at a maximum 1:3 ratio. Freeride weeks add high-altitude guiding with Gullu and the founding team. You get stance setup that matches goofy or regular, binding angles that make sense, and coaching that corrects posture before bad habits harden.
Honest about the learning curve
Snowboarding’s first days can feel steeper than skiing — more falls, more wrist awareness, more patience. We say that up front. Four days give you a real introduction; seven days are where heel-to-toe transitions and linked S-turns usually click. We will never rush you onto Phase 1 before you can stop on purpose.
Kashmir after the straps come off
Hotel stays with breakfast and dinner, chai that actually warms you, and graduation nights finished with Wazwan when the academy week ends. Private heated 4×4s between Srinagar Airport (SXR) and Gulmarg mean you are not wrestling boards into shared transport after dark.

How we keep you safe
- •Beginner programmes include helmets with rental and explicit coaching on wrist-safe falling, heel-edge brakes, and lift etiquette before progression.
- •Freeride and high-alpine days include avalanche risk evaluation, beacon drills, and terrain selection matched to group ability and the day’s snowpack.
- •Base elevation is ~2,600 m; Phase 1 ~3,100 m; freeride summit objectives can approach 4,300 m. We pace hydration, rest, and ascent to support acclimatisation.
- •Travel and medical insurance (plus emergency rescue cover for freeride weeks) is your responsibility and strongly recommended.
- •Gondola closures and storms are part of Kashmir winters. When the upper mountain is shut, we move to sheltered forest riding or foundational drills — never forced objectives.
