Overview

At a glance

Kausarnag — Kausar Nag, Kounsarnag — sits in Kulgam district, a high alpine lake that rewards a proper multi-day approach rather than a rushed day trip. The special companion of this trail is the Vishav (Vaishau): you leave the road at Aharbal, often called the Niagara of Kashmir for its waterfall, and walk forest and meadow until the lake opens at 3,550 metres.

Our itinerary is five days and four nights. Srinagar to Kongwattan on day one, Mahinag on day two, the lake on day three, back to Kongwattan on day four, and out via Aharbal on day five. Grade is moderate: daily walks of five to seven hours, a steeper push to the lake, and a long descent. Distance is about 32 kilometres on the core walking days, up to around 36 depending on side walks and the exact line.

June to August is the window. Himalayan Ibex camps the route with vegetarian meals, tents and a qualified team. Aharbal is a known tourist stop; Kausarnag itself still feels like a destination, not a viewpoint you drive to.

Led by: Himalayan Ibex guides who know the Aharbal–Kongwattan–Mahinag line and the weather that builds on the Pir Panjal in monsoon weeks.

Itinerary

Day by day

Day 1Drive ~3 hours to Aharbal | Trek ~7 km, ~3 hours | 1,600 m → ~2,200–2,550 m

Srinagar to Kongwattan

Pickup in Srinagar. Drive to Aharbal, then walk forest trails to the Kongwattan camping ground. Hot dinner and a first night in tents. The altitude gain is gentle; the forest does most of the talking.

Day 2Altitude ~2,550 m → 2,900 m | Distance: ~7 km | Time: ~6 hours

Kongwattan to Mahinag

After breakfast we pack camp and walk toward Mahinag. The country opens; lunch is at Mahinag. Overnight camp. Meals through the day: tea, breakfast, lunch, evening snacks and dinner.

Day 3Altitude to 3,550 m | Distance: ~5 km | Time: ~5 hours | Steeper trail

Mahinag to Kausarnag

The day’s climb is shorter in kilometres and steeper underfoot. Kausarnag Lake is the reward — clear water, big walls, and time to walk the shore. Lunch beside the lake. Night at Kausarnag camp in cold, quiet air.

Day 4Sunrise at the lake | Descent ~7 hours

Kausarnag to Kongwattan

We rise early for sunrise on the water, then leave no trace and descend toward Kongwattan. The way down is long rather than brutally steep — rolling ground, peaks, and time to walk well. Camp again at Kongwattan.

Day 5Trek 3–6 hours along the Vishav | Drive 2–3 hours to Srinagar

Kongwattan to Aharbal to Srinagar

Kahwa and czot (local bread) if the kitchen is in that mood, then meadows and forest back to Aharbal Falls. Time by the cascade, then the countryside drive to Srinagar by late afternoon.
