Overview

At a glance

Warwan Valley is a high Trans-Himalayan Kashmir trek — among the most offbeat walking lines in India. You cross from the barren, coloured mountains of Panikhar in the Suru country of Kargil into the sumptuous green of Warwan: grasslands, pastures, wildflower meadows, river deltas and glacier. One of the striking passages is a long glacier walk of around ten kilometres, done with trekking poles rather than technical ice gear when conditions allow.

Warwan itself stays cut off for winter. In summer the tourist flow is still thin. Villages keep older ways of living. The trail is an ancient connector between Kargil and Kashmir. The gradient is difficult. Himalayan Ibex recommends it for seasoned trekkers or people with solid fitness and previous high-altitude days — not a first Himalayan holiday.

The package from ₹25,500 per person covers camping equipment, meals on the trek, qualified staff and medical cover on the mountain. Road transport and mandatory offloading are extra unless you add them. We brand this as Himalayan Ibex, not a misspelt third name on an old PDF.

Led by: Himalayan Ibex trek leaders and a full mountain crew. Warwan is a militarily sensitive area; we handle permits and brief you on village etiquette — no photographs of people who do not want them.

Itinerary

Day by day

Day 1Altitude: ~8,795 ft → ~10,700–10,800 ft | Drive: ~185 km, 7–8 hours

Srinagar to Panikhar

A full-day drive from Srinagar Airport country via Sonamarg, the Sindh River (a Jhelum tributary) dancing on your right, then the climb to Zojila Pass (3,528 m) into Ladakh-side Kargil. Lunch stop in Drass — bitter in winter, a quiet highland village in summer. Through Kargil market to Panikhar in the Suru Valley: paddy at the foot of mountains, few shops, a welcome that still feels unhurried. Buy anything essential in Srinagar or Kargil; Panikhar has little retail. Night at camp.

Day 2Rest day at ~10,700–10,800 ft

Panikhar — acclimatisation and exploration

Do not skip this day. The trek goes high and long.

A rest and acclimatisation day before the Trans-Himalayan walking begins. Explore Panikhar village and the Suru landscape. Trails here also point toward Zanskar and the Nun–Kun massif. Village farming life and hospitality set the pace. Use the day to hydrate, walk gently, and sleep.

Day 3Altitude: 10,700 ft → 12,350 ft | Distance: 14 km | Time: 5–6 hours

Panikhar to Sumdo / Denora

First trekking day. Walk to the shimmering Panikhar Nallah, parallel then across a bridge. The village falls away. A wide trail in a narrow barren valley, gradual ascent, river on your right. A lush grassy meadow cut by streams, a shepherd settlement, then Sumdo — confluence of two rivers. Another half hour around a curve and the intersecting valleys open; camp is scenic among rivers, meadow and mountain chains.

Day 4Altitude: 12,350 ft → 12,875 ft | Distance: 3 km | Time: ~1.5 hours

Sumdo to Kalapari

Shortest walking day, easy gradient — the other days are not. Multiple cold stream crossings; shoes off, feet numb, half an hour in the basin. Stay left up-valley, right of the nala. After the crossings, the Denora–Sumdo basin is wide and flower-strewn. Kalapari meadow camp sits beside a river stream.

Day 5Altitude: 12,875 ft → 11,550 ft via ~14,550 ft | Distance: 17 km | Time: ~11 hours

Kalapari to Kaintal via Lomvilas Pass

Longest and toughest day. Early start. Glacier and pass.

The crux. Length, moraine and glacier make the day, not a need for crampons in usual summer condition — poles are the main tool, and the team sets a safe line. Soon after leaving camp you walk moraines with Kalapari summit and glacier in view. A glacier-fed lake holds floating snow; beside it the Kaintal Glacier, about a kilometre across. Another glacier passage, then the climb toward Lomvilas Pass (~14,550 ft on this day; the trek’s listed high mark is 14,469 ft). Frozen lakes, snowfields, a steep boulder descent, then the hard, icy Bracken glacier — careful feet — rocky moraine, and at last Kaintal’s grassland camp. Heaven after a hard day, two-plus hours down moraine to the glacier edge, then another hour of rough ground to the river basin.

Day 6Altitude: 11,550 ft → 10,950 ft | Distance: 16.5 km | Time: ~6 hours

Kaintal to Humpet

Long day of continuous ups and downs. River-side walking, shepherd huts, many cold fords (shoes off, water shallow). Horses on the grass. Humps in the trail give sudden views. Sar grassland, then the Bracken glacier falls out of sight. A couple of hours later Humpet appears: Kashmir’s lush west against Ladakh’s barren east. Camp on grassland with a view of the shepherd village of Thangkam.

Day 7Altitude: 10,950 ft → 9,225 ft | Distance: 16 km | Time: 7–8 hours

Humpet to Sukhnai

A long downward day into Sukhnai in Warwan — a valley of hundreds of plant species, many of them threatened. Ascent first, then about four hours of descent to grasslands and Sukhnai village. Junctions where a clean river meets Kaintal Nala; one side holds the line toward Sheshnag and the Amarnath yatra. Overhanging sections need careful, confident feet. Farms with short fences, a countryside look, then two more hours into the village.

Day 8Trek: ~15 km, ~5 hours | Drive: ~5 hours via Margan Top

Sukhnai to Basmina to Srinagar

Last walking day: grasslands, the Marwah River, Rekenwas and Basmina. Ups and downs, then Basmina — a slightly larger village, a few shops, river on one side, people still curious about where you have come from. Vehicles meet you here for the scenic drive over Margan Top, down toward Anantnag, orchards, NH-1 and Srinagar.
